Chris’s Recipes: Raw Inca Blue Birthday Cake

November 5th, 2008 / 3 Comments » / by Chris

This is dead easy. If I can do it, you can.

Portion size - this is for one, so make the rest up as you go for a bigger serving:

Equipment:

  • A blender / mixer
  • A mould of some sort to shape the base of the “cake”, so long as it has a flat bottom, because that’s where you’re going to put your blueberries, when you turn it over.

Ingredients:

  • A mixed handful of walnuts and almonds.
  • Half a cup full of oats
  • About 6 or so Inca Berries - they add a nice tang apparently (I wouldn’t know - I didn’t taste it) but they’re optional if you can’t get them
  • 2 tbsp pre-soaked raisins, including their juice
  • 2 tbsp blueberries.

Method:

Soak your raisins for a couple of hours beforehand.

Keep the blueberries separate for now, and blend the rest of the ingredients until fairly smooth - you should be able to spoon them out of the blender into your mould and create a flat base (currently it’s inverted so you’ll be looking at the bottom of the “cake” once it’s in the mould).

Shove the mould in the freezer for 5 - 10 mins, however long you can wait.

Now empty the mould carefully onto a plate so it’s now the right way up, and out of the mould - the extra bit of juice from the soaked raisins should help with the consistency.

Then just place your blueberries lovingly on top of your cake “base”, and badabing! you’s got yourself a Raw Inca Blue (Birthday) Cake. It doesn’t have to be your birthday :)

Other Ideas:

If you’re not going raw, or you want to spice it up, why not turn it into cheese cake, by adding some ricotta before you add the blueberries, or you could add strawberries, the options are endless. You could even forget the base and use bread and bananas instead, but that would just be a banana sandwich wouldn’t it.

Enjoy!

Day #65: History is made - well done USA!

November 4th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Chris

Well - what a day! A new president, and finally someone who looks like they’re up to the job. Congratulations to America for getting it right. Well done people.

My sugars this morning were 4.2 again - not bad.

I drank a fair amount of juice this morning in preparation for my game of squash at lunchtime. It worked a little, but not really, I was prety lethargic throughout the game and didn’t break a sweat. I think I’m actually looking forward to breaking a sweat, as when I do it’ll mean I’ve got some energy.

I picked up an old iron in Sparwood - the town where I go to play squash, about 20 mins away. Why am I telling you about an old iron? Well it’s one without the steaming holes, which means you can use it to melt the wax on your snowboard - good stuff. Cost me $2, hope it works :)

I also spoke to my doctor today about my latest test results. The genetic HemoChromo test isn’t back yet, but the “in-house” test came back with an elevate level of ferritin again - higher than last time, and also show high Iron absorption, so… it’s looking at the moment that I’m heading in the direction of planet HemoChromo. My white bloodcell count came back normal - it was a little low last time, so I’m happy that it’s normal now.

I think I’m going to try a homeopathic rememdy for the Iron issue, apaprently there is one, so I’d be stupid not to try it, and just go ahead with the blood letting now wouldn’t I.

And it snowed here today - yes! finally! it was a bit wet - needs to get a little colder I suppose, but wet snow is good apparently as the hill soaks it up and it makes a good foundation for the rest of the season as the hill is saturated and therefore won’t absorb as much later in the season, meaning good deep pow for a few months :)

Well I suppose that’s it for another night, I’m going to head up and get some rest.

‘night.

Day #64: Snow Tonight? Let’s hope so

November 3rd, 2008 / No Comments » / by Chris

My sugars this morning were 4.2

I still didn’t feel that energetic his morning, I think my body’s telling me something, it’s asking for the next stage of energy. Well, and here’s a bit of overshare, I went for a number two last night and today wthout the aid of an enema - that’s something new. Not sure what it means, but I think it’s a good thing.

I met up with a ex work mate from the mine today for a cup of tea downtown - it was nice to catch up and hear how he’s doing, bit of chit chat etc.

I also grabbed some more bok choy and blueberries while I was out, and the local supermarket has basically double the price of the blueberries that I’m getting, out of season prices I guess. Bit of a bummer, but there you go.

I’ve arranged a game of squash tomorrow with another pal from the mine, so I’m hoping that my energy levels are at least going to allow me to get a sweat on. The last time I played I couldn’t even work up to that.

I’m loving my new computer by the way, still finding my way around for certain things that I’ve come to take for granted on a windows pc, but it’s definitely a quality piece of kit that really aids productivity.

It’s supposed to snow here tonight, in the wee hours, I hope it does because the ski hill is due to open in a month, and there’s nothing there right now other than grass and trees. I’m not sure if I mentioned this on a previous post, but I’ve signed up to take my Level 1 Snowboard instructor course in January. I figure that I wouldn’t be ready energy-wise in December, so January it is. If I pass, great, I could instruct at the hill, and if I don’t, at least I’ll be a better boarder at the end of it. Win win again.

I’m ready to hit the sack right now, so I’m going to sign off and head up.

‘night

Day #63: The Silver Surfer and Mr. Freeze combined

November 2nd, 2008 / No Comments » / by Chris

I forgot to mention yesterday, and I feel bad about it, that my wife and son gave me a silver medal award for my strive to good health, and I got a lovely pair of sheepskin slippers to boot - really handing for my increasingly cold feet.

My sugars this morning were 4.6, again I got up a little later than usual, so that’s probably why - we’ll see what they are tomorrow. I hope it’s not the blueberry juice raising them.

I have to say, that unfortunately I felt pretty weak this morning, not as energetic as I have been feeling that last few mornings since being on the blueberry juice, which worried me a little.

I took our dog out for a walk to get some fresh air this afternoon, and it was miserable weather - drizzly and drab, but hey, when you live in a ski town, not all your precip is going to be snow now is it. Goes with the territory I suppose.

I also went for a swim and hot tub / steam room session tonight which was really enjoyable. With all this cold juice that I’m drinking, my body really is running cold at the moment. For example, I went into the steam room at the pool, and Guy “A” came in, then another guy, then Guy “A” left, then the other guy, then another guy came in and left, and then Guy “A” came in again and left, while Johnny cold blooded here just sat there wondering why I wasn’t too hot already. I think I mst have been in there for 30 minutes - really. I had a little hot tub soak after that, and then I felt exhausted, so got changed and headed home.

A little bit of work on my wife’s website, and that’s the day.

So, as I get ready to head up the wooden hill, I’ll bid you good night and sleep tight.

Ciao.

Day #62: Blood sugars of 72!

November 1st, 2008 / 2 Comments » / by Chris

No, not me. I was just getting your attention, I’ll get to the 72 blood sugar bit in a minute.

I had a lie in this morning, which followed a late night.

I was working late, and so after I finished, and typed up yesterday’s post I thought I’d chill out a little and do a little mindless web surfing, you know. Bit of youtube, bit of this and that.

I ended up finding an interesting site on diabetes, well the guy behind it is more interesting than the site, and another website on hypnosis and diabetes.

Before I carry on, my sugars were 4.8 this morning (because of the lie in again I assume).

Yeah, so, this guy, and bear in mind that normal pre meal sugar ranges are:

3.5 - 6.5 / 4 - 7, depending on who you ask, this guy went into a diabetic coma with blood sugars of 72.

Yep I typed it right - 72.

He was hospitalised obviously and put on all sorts of med, including the obvious one, our friend insulin. Now? he’s not on any insulin at all, or any drugs for that matter! He’s basically “cured” himself of the disease.

Here’s a youtube vid of one of his talks which you might find interesting, he reminds me of a cross between Chris Rock and Morgan Freeman :)

Now, onto diabetes and hypnosis. The hypnotist in question was diagnosed with type II diabetes and has managed to reduce his medication using stress relieving hypnosis techniques. Anyway, I’ll let his site do the talking, suffice to say, I’m thinking of going to see this guy to help me after my juicefeast.

His site is: http://www.mindbodyhypnosis.com/Diabetes.htm

Now, back to my day. We went to a psychic fair in a nearby town. There was supposed to be a hypnotherapist there, which is why I wanted to go. I’m interested in getting help for sleeping, eating for when I come out of the juice feast. Anyway it was really disappointing, there as hardly anyone there and it was basically jst a bunch of tarot readers and clairvoyants, book and jewelry stalls - pretty disappointing, but you live and learn eh.

We made the best of it and went for a nice tea in a nearby cafe and investigates a liquor store that has some fantastic whisk(e)ys, wines and liqueurs - got to get ready for breaking this juice feast in style you know.

And finally, I downloaded Silverado a while back, which I originally watched when it came out, but I’d forgotten how good it was, so we watched that tonight, and it was bloody good. Fun trivia for you:

John Cleese get higher billing than Kevin Costner, and Brian Dennehy plays a sheriff. Now which other movie - which came out a few years earlier, did Brian Dennehy play a sheriff in? (no you can’t use IMDB)

Right, I’m off to bodkins now, going to try and get up earlier tomorrow and get on with life.

‘nighty night.

Day #61: Two Months Down

November 1st, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by Chris

That’s right, the end of October. I must say though it doesn’t seem to hae gone as quickly as September did. And I don’t think it’s the one extra day that did it either.

I passed the halfway mark in this month, and I think that both help and hindered my positive though process as I mentioned on a previously post. Yes, halfway was a great stage to reach, but it also put the second half into perspective for me - too much perspective.

So I learned, and am still learning to take it one day at a time.

My sugars this morning were 4.6. Slightly higher than the last couple of days, but If I’m thinking that 4.6 is higher than usual, I think that’s a good sign really that my sugars are where they need to be.

I’m still having doubts about whether my sugars will stay “normal” after the juicefeast is over, but if that’s the case - then so be it, I’ll be a lot healthier and have a much better appreciation for healthy food than I had before I started this journey, so I can lose either way, and can either win, or win big.

I do hope I win big though :)

Today was pretty much a nose to the grindstone day in terms of work. I didn’t even get out of the house, other than onto the back deck to breathe some mountain air, but that was it.

I did do some more pressups and yoga this morning, so the energy levels are definitely coming back. I’m even toying with the idea of playing squash again, a good sign.

My son went out trick or treating tonight with some of his friends. Halloween is way bigger here than it was / is in England, don’t know why, but it’s a pretty big deal. Anyway, he seemed to have a good time as he went out in his inflatable sumo suit on the hunt for free sweets (candy).

So that’s pretty much it for me and today. I’m going to go to sleep and wake up to start shoving the celery into the juicer on Day #62, the first day of the last full month of the feast. Rock on.

A domani…

Day #60: Nuts, Berries and Bullshit

October 30th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Chris

Sugars this morning? 4.2

Well I did go to bed earlier last night, I had my bath and was dropping off reading some buddhist philosophy, all going well. And then… I woke up at 23:30 (I’d only fallen asleep at around 22:20ish) and that was that. I lay there, brain-a-buzzin’ until I couldn’t stand it anymore. So I got up, went downstairs and watched some videos on meditation and the like to try and calm my mind.

It’s like my brain doesn’t realise that I’m awake, and I’m still having all these crazy half dream / half wakened mish mosh of thoughts. Anyway, the meditation did the trick. After a couple of hours I went back up and hit the sack for the second time. I meditated in bed again for a few minutes, and dropped off nicely.

Again, I had more energy today though, now all I need is the sleep and I’ll be superman :)

We had the dry walling done today for the basement / Homeopathy clinic and the garage too, so it’s getting there. My wife and I also had a nice cup of tea downtown and a little stroll. We bumped into a local writer and friend who was asking if it was down to my wife that I was on this diet:

“Did she put you on this nuts, berries and bullshit diet?” he asked, laughing.

I admitted it was all my doing, but we joked about that being a great title for a book: “Nuts, Berries and Bullsht”. Maybe.

Maybe it’s only good for a blog post title.

Before I go, I recently sent my mate Mat in England an email to let him know that Jonathan Coulton was playing in his neck of the woods and he should go if he gets the chance. Well he did! He emailed me a couple of hours ago to let me know it was a great gig and very funny.

If you’ve not heard of Jonathan Coulton, then you’re missing out listen to this taster:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

and then go and buy some of his ridiculously under priced work over at jonathancoulton.com

Also, and I mustn’t forget this, all she’ll kill me :) My wife gave me a recipe to put up on the blog so I have. It’s for “Raw Soup” or “Winter smoothie”, whichever sounds better I guess., and it’s here:

http://chrissherry.com/juicefeast/2008/10/cheryls-recipes-raw-soup-winter-smoothie/

Well, that’s it from me for today. the land of nod beckons - at least for a few hours I hope. (Thanks to Rachel for her comment on the previous post by the way, I’m going to lay off the B Complex in the evening and see how it goes).

καλή νύχτα
