Check out Sereir Boutenko.

Cooking food is apparently bad for diabetics, even if it is vegan. Raw is the way to go.

I know that studies have proven that cooked potatoes cause blood sugar spikes in diabetics, and raw potatoes don't. So there ya go, for whatever it may be worth.

Thanks for your comments guys, and gal.
And Laura, I did check my sugars after meals for a while. But I've got some news on my sugars that I'll posting shortly in a dedicated post.

During the feast though, it was mostly fasting sugars that I measured.

Well done mate for making it through, not that I had any doubt. The results at this stage seem encouraging, surely to have just 4.7 controlled by diet alone has to be good, the sugars in the fruit are being kept in check, so it seems to me somethings happening. I shall speak to you, and kick your ass at worms and stuff in about 7 hours time.

Hot food! You wild and crazy guy! No stopping you now is there? But surely chili can be hot even when it's cold?

Just to let you know that we're still out here enjoying your ever reduced suffering (and people say London makes you cynical). ;-)

Have a good break.

Malc, my man!

How the devil are you? Thanks for the congrats mate I appreciate it. I'm going to start back at TKD once I get my energy back, can't let that go to waste can I? How are you doing? How's life in blighty - good I hope. Whenever I do get back to England I'm going to be sure to see everyone, so keep in touch mate. I often think back to our times together at Jin Sil with happy memories - we did good work there my friend.

Take care, and may the truth be with you :)

Congratulations Chris!

Like your other commenter, I too am immensely happy for your achievement - your indomitable spirit definitely shone through!

The video made good viewing; even though you've made it to the finishing line I'd be interested to see Juice Feast 2: Attack of the Prunes, and Juice Feast 3: Revenge of the Pith (see what I did there?)

Good to see you happy and healthy (and Cheryl too). It's been too long mate.

Congrats again,
Malc

Thanks Bee for your kind words. Good luck to you on your journey too. Stick at it, it's worth it. I just had my second bowl of prunes for breakfast so I'm buzzing right now :) I definitely don't envy you doing it over winter and Christmas, but you'll be a stronger person when you reach the other end. Without doubt. Good on ya!

Hooray for Chris! Hooray for his family putting up with him! Hooray for prunes! Hooray for juicing! Hooray for snow! I am very proud of you. You are a blessing, an inspiration, and a delight to read. I celebrate with you and for you. I appreciate your honesty, your daily attention over these 93 days. The view from Eagle Mountain, who knew? Its been a refreshing delight to follow along and know that I'm not alone in this juicing path (the dark days and the delight days). I toast my green smoothie to you. CHEERS! And congratulations on your HEALTH! Its snowing down here in Minnesota too now. Thank you Canada! Happy Skiing!

Great to see you standing proud (not in the erection sense!) at the summit - a fantastic achievement. Rebooting the body systems seems an awful lot harder than rebooting Windows, though hopefully needs to be done less frequently! Congratulations on an amazing achievement.

You sound good, you look weird. Way thin. It's been so long since we met in person I'd prolly pass you in the street without recognising you. You're a way off the photo at the top. But that's the journey for you. Best of luck with the last vertical bit. You're strong. Bring it on. :)

Thanks a lot Mark, I appreciate the sentiment. You know when I came over to Fernie after several trips back and forth to between Canada and England in the preceding yeaars, I went into a Tim Hortons and realised that it had a particular "smell" that I'd associated with Canada.
So I know what you mean about the smell, it is unique and I has a special place in my...hmm...head and stomach. It won't be too long before I can have something from there - one of there more healthy options mind yu :)

All the best Mark,

Wow. Coming down to the home stretch. Well done Chris.

I'm not sure that I could *drive* past a Timmy's let alone go in and not be tempted by the smells if I was in the same position as you.

You've shown extraordinary control and I am truly impressed.

Please post any press pics you get from the local newspaper - although I have difficulty imagining you having lost so much weight, it'd be good to see Happy-Smiley-Chris..

Hey Bee, thanks for the comment.
Yeah, I'm getting prepared for the prunes, juicy fruits and salads in just over week's time! and I never thought I'd look forward to prunes so much :) It will definitely be good to eat with the family regularly too, that's been just plain weird.

Still no really big dump as yet, fingers still crossed...

I'm enjoying reading days and days in one sitting. And smiled at the Cliffs of Insanity. Great movie -- even greater anology, ha ha! Hang in there! Success is yours for the sipping. Congratulations on your blood sugar success too. While you are one day at a time, are you learning what it takes to break a feast? How will your life & eating as a family be different now that the end is near? And I hope it snows for you soon!

Hey Stu,

As I type this reply on 20th November, I've lost about 20 kilos, or 45 pounds.
I now weigh 60 kilos, or 132 pounds, so that's about 9 stone 6lbs

Hey Neil, thanks for the support.
I'm still climbing :) Day 92 is the top. You're right though, maybe I should visualise this last stretch as a perilous cliff face at the top of the moutain that I've got to scale to reach to top - sounds good.

"What just happened?" - No I've not seen it yet, I'll go and check it out - thanks.

Take care friend,
Chris.

You're doing great Chris! How are you "visualizing" your time left? If you're thinking of the last stretch as walking down the other side of the mountain, with day 46 as the top, and now you're coming down, maybe instead if you think of "the journey" as a cliff face with Day 1 at the bottom and day 92 as the top 92, then you know if you lose your grip even a metre from the top, you're gonna fall. Damn, maybe that doesn't make it better at all!?! Alright, maybe just get one of those Hannibal Lector style masks with only room for a straw to fit through it... :-)

Have you seen "What Just Happened?" yet?

Thanks mate. I have a lot of respect for your 7 days, because at the end of the day, you didn't have to do it, which take a lot of discipline.

I had a look at your graph, very interesting to have so many metrics :) Sounds like Raw can get pretty smelly, but I think some of my green gas would give you a run for your money :)

Happy birthday Cheryl. Have fun with the raw week. The main thing I learned was variety seemed to be the key. And work out what a treat for you is. I found radishes and nuts a blessing. That and the amount of onions that only a single guy can eat. ;-)

Chris - I'm sure you'd never juice feast in winter. :-D

Hi Rachel, thanks for the comment and your advice on the B Complex. I have been taking it around 7pm, so maybe that is too late.
I'm going to knock it out from now on, and just have it at breakfast and lunchtime - thanks.
As for the coconut oil, I'll look into that.

Hi Chris, thanks for the videos. You really have lost a lot of weight! Is your photo from day 1 of the juice feast!?! Have you considered adding some coconut oil to your juice feast I think 1 tablespoon was ok from memory of juicefeasting.com? It's easily converted into energy and might help stop you losing so much weight too? The other thing I was wondering about is your super b complex supplement - do you take it at night? I always have crazy dreams/nightmares if I take B vitamins at night. Anyway whatever you decide please listen to your body, it knows what it needs. All the best Rachel

It's great the fruit's giving you a boost, and that looks like a fair old shopping list of supplements there. I'm guessing I'll not be finding them in my late night corner shop.

I'm on the last day of my 7 days raw food. It's surprising how you get into it. I think I may do a month raw next year when the weather's warmer. I think I've learned quite a bit and it's been a lot easier than I expected. Let's see if I can try and get a lot more fresh stuff into my diet in between.

Keep up the goodness.

Congrats on your journey.

I'm all for the 4-means to get your greens, especially green juice (I call it Plant Blood) which I pretty much consume daily. It's so good for you, as you know... getting such a concentrated source of fresh nutrients.

Best of luck with your Raw path... I love mine :)

By the way, starting on Thursday is a great idea. It means come next Friday, you can go out with a bang!

Hey Bee,

Thanks for the advice :) I'll have to check out eye pillows. I'd forgotten about lavender - I'll sprinkle some on my regular pillow tonight and see how it goes.

Delegation and forgiveness too - interesting ideas. I'll work on those.

All the best,

I hear you loud and clear on the "you can get pretty tired of things that don't taste too good" track. I admire your all greens regimine. I find I have to add apples to some of them to make them palatable. And celery juice straight up, that's medicinal stuff. Get some sleep. I know its out on a limb, but get an eye pillow with lavendar in it. When I am fried from work and absolutely need sleep, it works like a charm. Forgive somebody and/ or delegate something run a close second to getting more sleep too.

Just came across this off a link from Mats' HydePodCorner - and spent time (probably more than I should being as I'm at work!) reading through it. Educational and entertaining - it was good to get an insight into your life over tere, and as always Sheck, you are truly an inspiration. I have every faith you'll see this through. Will keep tuning in and looking forward to reading your thoughts at the finish line. Also - noticed your comment earlier about vegan. Sounds similar to me - Jen and the kids are all now vegeterians, and I am when I'm at home...but have to stray sometimes. :-) Neil (Kayos)

Ended up at a local pub quiz tonight (like you needed to know that) and met a New Zealand Nutritionist and a personal trainer. Both backed you up in your feast as a top thing. I was asking about it and they were with you 100%. btw -we came third, but there were only 2 of us. Beaten by two teams of 5. We beat a team of 10 (regardless of them syaing they were 2 teams of 5. Yay us. Yay you. :-)

Thanks Krash.
I was sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis mate. But on the positive side you're in a good position to really take control of your health at this early stage.
By all means learn from what I'm doing, I hope lots of other people can and will too. If you need any help don't hesitate to get in touch, but I would say have a read of the "There is a cure for diabetes" book for sure.

All the best to you Krash,

Chris, this is inspirational. I was diagnosed last week with type2 diabetes, and this makes me want to rush out and buy a juicer :)

Forgive me if I watch and wait while you go through it first though. I'm really chicken when it comes to my health, as I've had a couple of scares over heartrate/bloodpressure/diabetes now. I'll be checking out the links you have out to the informational sites, and I'll be lurking and hoping it continues to be an overall good for you.

Happy Thanksgiving! Your journey and your blog remind me I have much to be thankful for! I know others who experience the cold differently now too because of their diet. Fascinating. And I gotta hand it to you -- Horton's to get goodies for the fam -- you are a cool dad. And so happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Carpe diem.

Hi Rachel, thanks for your comment - much appreciated. I'm only drinking the greens right now, and I think that's the way it's going to be until the end, no fruit juice for me yet. I get the feeling that my body's going through some kind of change right now, so I'm not overly worried by the 8.5 last night, I just hope it's no a regular occurrence.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Chris, have enjoyed reading your blog, thanks for sharing your journey and hope your sugars sort themselves out...just wondering if you are drinking any fruit at all or only greens/celery/cucumber etc? Cheers Rachel

Thanks the for comment and gratitude Beearawfoodie, much appreciated. I know what you mean when you say you feel like you're at the base of the mountain. It's hard work, but you've got to just keep your determination to succeed at this.
What helps me is that I have, in effect given myself no choice but to succeed, because I think that if I fail at this, in the years to come, I'll feel so bad about not being able to see it through, and the thought of that is worse than the daily grind of the juice feast I guess. Hopefully, you'll find your "necessary perception" that will get you through. And if you need any support, you know where to come :)
Good luck, and cheers to you too - within only a few days, you'll have done your first week!

Congratulations on Day 38! And congrats on the success of your new biz venture too. I am very grateful you are keeping this daily blog on your juice feast. I am on day one. And it seems like I'm standing at the base of a huge mountain. Everyone who has climbed the mountain raves about how wonderful it was, and those tales are encouraging. But your candor with your first week is appreciated. I am still reading through your Sept posts, and will eventually get thru all your posts as these next few weeks roll by, but I have to say thank you. Thank you for your daily attention to this not-so-easy path to health. You are an encouragement. And cheers to the next green juice glass you polish off! To your health!

Hey Mark,
Thanks for your comment and questions - here goes:

Q: Could I have started the diet while at the mine?
A: No, not really, for a couple of reasons, the first 3 weeks of the juice feast is pretty restrictive in that you have to do an enema every morning to help flush all the toxins from your body, and working at the mine I was driving a 250 tonne truck, which I was basically on for 12 hours solid.
Plus there was a 2 hour commute in a bus too work at 6:12am, which would have meant me getting up at around 4:30am to do the necessary, plus make my juice for the day, and hope that I wouldn't need to "go" again on the bus. In that first 2 weeks, I really needed to be within reach of a toilet during the mornings.
The other reason I couldn't have done it at the mine was I was working shifts, 2 days, 2 nights and 4 off, so the night would have buggered up my body clock and routine, so another reason I couldn't continue there.

I could have returned to work there I guess after the 92 days + a week or so? But that's me, I suppose you could go back after the initial 3 week period, but I'm still having to do enemas every 3 days to make sure the toxins are leaving Sherryville.

Q: What are my sugars like during the day?
A: I measured my sugar this afternoon and it was 6.7. Which is pretty much what it was when I measured it during the day a few days ago. That's a little higher than I'd like it to be, but at the same time, I'm expecting it to come down over the next 2 months.

I hope that answers your questions Mark, and I think as well as just answering in this post I'll put up a FAQS page. If anyone else out there has questions - please ask. One of the reasons I'm doing a blog is to get information out there for people who want to help themselves.

All the best,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Sounds like you're still doing really well with the juise.

I have a couple of questions for you.

Could you have started the diet while you where working at the mine?

If not, how long before you could have returned to work?

What are your sugars like through the day?

Thanks,,

Mark

Hey Dan, good to see you on here. Did you watch the movie as part of your film studies? It's not a film someone would stumble across usually.
And you're right - "innocent" is exactly the word to describe the film.

Hey Mat!

Thanks for the support and words of kindness. It is hard work, especially with all the good food I'm missing that my wife cooks, but I feel like I don't really have a choice if you know what I mean. I need to do this, it's a simple as that.

Going raw for a week sounds interesting mate, you could actually east some pretty great stuff on that diet, check the web (I'm sure you already have) there's some cool recipes out there.

Me personally, I'm looking forward to eating warm crunchy food, a nice coffee, that kind of thing, but there's no way I'm going back to eating the crap I was eating. It's gonna be a brand new start for me.

All the best Mat, and let me know on here how you do with you Raw week.

It sounds like a great thing to do and it does make perfect sense. I really admire your determination. Stick with it man (like you needed me to say that ;-) ). And from a critical point of view, which I know will bother you, your blog's a really good read.

You've actually inspired me to have a go at a week 'raw' (I know, WIMP!), although obviously in the 'credit crunch'(no idea what the name for the almost recession in Canada is)I'll finish what I've already got in the fridge first.

All the best mate.

Hi Mark!
Thanks very much for your comment, and thanks for your support I really appreciate it.
Sorry about any "overshare" but I feel I've got to get this out there, for me for later, and for anyone else who wants to try the Juice feasting thing.

I was diagnosed in May 2002 with T2, but it got steadily worse and shortly after moving to Canada I made the move to Insulin. Prior to this I was on 20 units of Lantus a day (the long lasting one).

The last time I took it was August 31st, the night before I began.

Sorry to hear about your diabetes Mark. If you want any tips on natural supplements etc., let me know.

Thanks again,
Chris.

Hey Chris,

Sorry to hear about the Diabetes. I've been following your journey for a couple of days now and must say I'm impressed with your determination.

I haven't read the book and don't know anything about your routine other than what you've described...sometimes TMI :)

Are you recently diagnosed? T2 I suspect if you're managing without Insulin?

My daughter was diagnosed with T1 in 2000, then two years later, I caught T2...they say that you should do things with your kids...I don't think that this is what they meant.

OK, I'm overweight, eat poorly and don't get enough exercise..."it" knocked on the door and I invited it in...From what I've seen of you, you're a pretty fit young guy. That sucks.

I'll continue to follow your battle, I wish you well.
